Chris Perna’s UT4 Necris Reveal

Chris Perna’s Necris images from this week’s Twitch broadcast have now been posted on the Unreal Tournament Blog. Some of these get really close to “nailing it” IMO. Also good news is that Epic plans on beefing up the branding of each faction. I think this will be critical to breath life into this game and bring in new players.

UT4 First Pass HUD Design Revealed

Epic revealed their “first pass” HUD design that will be in game very soon. I’m a bit surprised by the blandness of the overall look to be honest. There were some community designs in the forum that looked much more modern to me but it’s early days yet. Once this is in-game, we’ll get a better feel for how it will look and function.

One thing to keep in mind is that there will be in-game opacity controls for the HUD so maybe that will help the overall look.

Also, as you can see, Epic is dead set on the vertical weapon bar. Hopefully with the opacity adjustments this will be functional. I have to think that competitive UTers will be clamoring for horizontal weapon bars developed by community members and placed on the Epic Market Place.

UT Project Update 12/3/14: Character and Weapon Update, HUD Info

This week’s project update is a “must watch” for UT fans.  Joe Wilcox details the HUD design that will be the default design for UT. It sounds like it will be in one of the builds very soon.

The highlight of this week is Chris Perna’s Necris artwork and astonishingly, a Necris sculpture he made over the holidays!  Awesome!!

Steve Polge continues with further link/goo combo concepts with today’s changes much more usable IMO. No discussion on movement however…

Watch todays update on the UT Twitch Channel HERE.

New Clawfist Deathmatch Map For UT4: DM-Temple

Epic’s UT mapping machine Sidney Rauchberger, aka Clawfist, has put out yet another fantastic map, DM-Temple. This time it is an Unreal Chizra style vibe with flowing water and beautiful Unreal-esque lighting.

The fact that these maps look so beautiful with only BSP is simply amazing! Much of this is due to Clawfist’ incredible abilities but also to the fact that the lighting in UE4 is just such a huge step ahead from UE3.

This map won’t be in a build until next week due to the holiday but you can still play it in the current build thanks to raxxy in the forums. Raxxy was kind enough to cook a version for folks without UE licenses.

UT Project Update: Community Map CTF-Control Overview, Epic CTF Maps Preview

Little bit of a yawn inducing project update this week discussing a community CTF map and some new CTF maps. Sid’s new map, CTF-CrashSite, is very cool though. The guy keeps proving over and over that he is a mapping machine!

Here’s hoping Steve Polge can come back soon so we can get back to some more meaty topics. I don’t think we’re ready to put movement to bed just yet…

Weapon Models Update

There are some incredibly exciting and encouraging signs regarding the new UT going on in the weapon forums. YemYam, an Epic modeler for 11 years, has joined the team. To get a feel for his mind-blowing capability, check out his portfolio HERE.

With YemYam coming on board, the rate of development for models will increase dramatically (it has been rather slow so far). His idea is to start getting crude prototypes in the game which I think is much better than Epic working behind the scenes with that part of the process and then revealing something final. Follow the development thread HERE.

Here’s his first cut model of Gooba’s Shock Rifle concept:

On the community modeling side, Tidal Blast is doing an incredible job of modeling Gooba’s Enforcer concept. Can’t wait to get my virtual hands on these babies!

UT Project Update: November Community Event Recap!

This week’s broadcast starts off with a 15 minute match between Chumb0 and Bleh that occurred at last weekends Epic event. Nice comeback by Bleh!

The main highlight for me in this broadcast was the discussion regarding the reveal of an internal map that only event members could see. Epic has been building a next gen map that will set the bar for mappers in all aspects. I can’t wait for the reveal!

BeyondUnreal Podcast: Episode 22

In this week’s edition, The White Dragon and Sir Brizz discuss the crazy new goo functionality. I have to agree with them that it’s a fun mechanic but basically useless at this point.

They also discuss the changes to CTF-Outside, the new map in this week’s build – CTF-Blank, and the current netcode performance. Lastly, they discuss Brizz’s movement mutators which are a HOT topic in the forums right now ;).

Unreal Engine Launcher for UT4

I recommend everyone playing the UT pre-alpha to use the Unreal Engine Launcher interface. I experienced a version mismatch this weekend between the forum download version and the launcher version.

I think the plans are to get everyone switched over to the launcher anyway and to deprecate the forum download links. You will also have much smaller weekly downloads if you use the launcher version.

If you already have an Unreal Engine 4 subscription, you already have the launcher. If you don’t, you can go HERE and download it separately and use it just for UT.
