10/10/16 UT Release Notes Available

The release notes are available for the upcoming UT release, tentatively scheduled for October 10th. This is a major release that will bump the Unreal Engine version from 4.12 to 4.14. The new release will undoubtedly wreak havoc on custom maps which more than likely will have to be recooked. So, we will most likely be starting over with the custom maps on the UC Hub. #Pre-alpha folks!

The most controversial change in this build is the removal of the impact hammer in free-for-all Deathmatch and also in Flag Run. This is going to be extremely difficult for long time UT fans to handle, primarily due to the loss of movement options that the hammer brings to the game. The second big change will be the removal of the grenade function from the Rocket Launcher to coincide with the addition of a dedicated grenade launcher.

The new grenade launcher will be an extension of what was the Bio Launcher. I’m pretty sure Epic is ready for a Hurricane Matthew-sized ***t storm after this release. I for one am going to be holding a stop watch in my first match timing the first “WTF, what happened to the…”?

Hang in there UT fans! Trust that Epic will get us “there” in the end a couple of years from now :-).

Epic Updates UT Forum Rules

Epic Games has updated the Unreal Tournament Forum rules. This is most likely designed to rein in some of the relentless bashing of the game that’s been going on.  Here’s a snippet:

We’re building Unreal Tournament as a collaboration between the community and Epic Games. We’re still in pre-alpha and we’re looking to get to alpha by the end of 2016/beginning of 2017. There’s still a lot to do – see how you can make a difference!

Unreal Tournament Development: Developing a game in the open with the community is something new to all of us. We are excited about the content being created by the community and we’re looking for ways to make the contribution process easier so we can get more people involved. People don’t usually get to see games this early, and we’re aware that game development is a slow process. This can sometimes get frustrating to contributors and players alike. We feel like we have something great going on, so if you have the patience to work with us and understand that you’re developing for and playing a game that is not ready for prime time, then we’d love for you to come along for the ride!

If you’re looking for immediate results, or the development process is too slow and frustrating for you, please consider joining us again at a later date as we move toward beta. While we value gameplay feedback, personal attacks and consistent negativity will not be tolerated. We want the forums to be an inviting place for both new and longtime posters to discuss the game. Please be mindful of this when you’re posting.

First Person Bio Rifle Test

Epic’s ZombieGreenWood has brought KazeoHin’s current Bio Rifle model in-game for a first person test for @utgame. The results are fantastic! The weapon silhouette has an unexpectedly chunky feel to it. It’s a very good sign for it to look this good even without textures, animations, and emissive materials.

Can’t wait to kiss goodbye to the UT3 Bio Rifle!

Gooba Discusses Path To Epic Games

In an article on 80 Level, Adam Wood, aka Gooba to UT fans, provides some insight into how he was able to get hired by Epic Games and work on the UT team. While this article may be pointed  out by the UT community as another “community involvement fluff piece”, it’s comforting to know that Gooba is very much alive and well and working on UT.
