BeyondUnreal Podcast: Episode 17

KazeoHin-TechAE’s Flak Cannon Concept

KazeoHin-TechAE has been hard at work on the new UT with an incredible flak cannon concept. Most notable here is that he has foregone much of a focus on the art side and gone straight to a beautiful 3D model. I’m incredibly impressed by what he’s put together in such a short time.

He’s finally got the attention of Chris Perna, so who knows, this may end up being THE flak cannon for the new UT! Pitch in on the UT forums and throw your two cents in!

9/19/14 UT Pre-Alpha Available

Epic is tugging on the heart strings on this build with the classic UT99 menu background greeting you on entry. In addition, some classic in-game sounds were added, most notably the UT99 UDamage sound. Sweet!

As usual, the pre-alphas are available in the UT Forums if you are a member.

More Gooba Goodness

Gooba has posted yet another example of perfect UT-ness. His latest example is his version of Lauren. Gooba and TeriyakiStyle have teamed up on the concept with TeriyakiStyle working on the modeling.

When you consider the backstory they are using, “Lauren was born to a poor asteroid mining family and built a reputation by eliminating her families competitors.” I would say Gooba nailed the concept spot on.  Amazing!

9/12/14 UT Pre-Alpha Is Available

If you’re a UT forum member, it’s not hard to figure out where to download it. The community needs to keep reminding folks that it is still a PRE-alpha.

I keep hearing people asking “where’s the weekly alpha release?” The correct answer is that there is NO RELEASE DATE SET FOR THE ALPHA. You can however download the PRE-alpha (barebones, buggy and unstable) if you would like to contribute to the development by playing it and providing feedback in the forums. Okay, stepping off my soapbox now…

Note, there is now a Win32 release for you 3.68GB of RAM types.

UT Project Update: Community Event Recap

This week’s project update is a summary of last weekend’s Community Event at Epic headquarters. It’s good to hear from their standpoint that it was a big success and that they gathered some much needed information to help them move forward.

It’s always great to hear Steve refer to the new UT as an ongoing, multi-year project. Music to my ears…

BeyondUnreal Podcast: Episode 16 – Epic Playtest Special Edition

Gooba’s Enforcer Model Is The One!

Epic has laid down the law and given a feel for how they are going to operate with regards to chosen community made assets. Chris Perna came into the forums last week and said the following:

Just to clarify we will not be doing design by committee here.

Epic will be making final calls on all approved artwork for our core UT project. We would like community participation but that doesn’t mean that we will be voting or polling. I have a direction that I would like to take the core project in visually. If I see a piece of art that fires on all cylinders I will share internally and make a call. I need you all to trust that it’s the right call. I realize it’s all pretty subjective so I’m ok to “agree to disagree”.

Epic has chosen one of Gooba’s concepts and it will be in the first release of the game. End of story. In my opinion, this is fantastic! The forums were getting fairly ratty and Epic needed to come in and reset the tone.

On top of that, Gooba can almost do no wrong. He has pumped out so many incredible concepts for the game. I have a feeling Gooba will be an Epic employee one day…
