Paragon: Gameplay First Look

Okay, it is with much reluctance that I post this due to the fact that if you take one look this, you’ll know why UT is taking so long to make.

If you’ve been keeping up on your gaming lately, you’ll know that Paragon is Epic’s new, triple-A MOBA game that has recently been revealed. One look at the visuals in this video and you can see that a huge part of Epic’s team is working on this. While the visuals are incredible, it’s a shame that this level of effort couldn’t be put into UT. Maybe it’s better for UT to lurk along in the background, away from the bean counters. Time will tell.

UT Project Update: Community Maps on Epic Hubs & Community Content

On the UT Twitch stream today, a bit of sad news for those of us hoping for a decked out, snowy DM-Chill for the holidays. The UT team is in the middle of making the big leap from UE 4.9 to UE 4.11 and it sounds like it has caused mayhem with the game. With the build being far from stable and Epic shutting down for two weeks over the holidays, it would be best not to hold your breath for a new build before January.

Also on the stream, Clawfist detailed out Epic’s plans for putting community maps on the Epic Hubs. He went through the list of maps that have been chosen for the first wave. Currently, all of the DM maps on the list are already on the UC Hub and the CTF maps will be added shortly. No need to wait for the Epic Hubs to get their act together :-).

Finally, Flak showed a few images of Joelipoo’s awesome Skaarj character from the forums. The most amazing thing is how well he implemented Gooba’s paintover in 3D space (which I don’t think was emphasized properly on the stream). This is some of the most amazing community work so far.

Epic To Install Community Maps on Official Hubs

Epic has stated that they will start placing selected community maps on the Official Hubs shortly.  Clawfist has released an initial list of maps to be installed. These are differentiated from community maps that are already built-in to the game such as DM-Lea and CTF-Pistola. They will available via redirect off the Epic Hubs just like the community hubs have been doing for a long time already :).

The Unreal Carnage Hub will attempt to stay synchronized to this list as much as possible but continue to provide additional community maps that aren’t on the list.

This Week in UT

Epic released a new build yesterday. The most notable addition is the new CTF map, CTF-Plaza, by mister mapping machine himself, Clawfist. It’s a great layout with an urban theme (BSP shell at this point). Hopefully it will lead to urban-themed official assets at some point.

Some players have noted issues with the offline challenges in this build so my guess is there will be an interim patch to fix that in the next week or two.

On the server side, trusted servers now have functioning XP progression bars at the end of a match which is highly welcomed. This is important to give a consistent user experience across servers.

During the project stream this week, Epic mentioned that DM-Chill is the next map to get the polishing treatment (yes, I know, the worst kept secret..). Once again, they will be using Gooba’s art for inspiration which pretty much guarantees that it will turn out beautiful.

Lastly, it should be noted that Epic has also added 32-bit support to the Launcher for those folks that want to stay in the dark ages :).

DM-UC-SpaceNoxx Playable WIP Available

Unreal Engine 4.10 Released

Unreal Engine is now at version 4.10 with the usual massive change log. With UT now 2 revisions back, it will interesting to see if the team skips 4.9 altogether. Release information can be found HERE.

One of the new features is the Landscape Mirror Tool seen below. Instant outdoor, symmetric CTF!

Use The “Download All Content” Button on Hubs

I added some more custom maps to the Unreal Carnage Hub tonight and it struck me that people might not be taking advantage of the “Download All Content” button inside Hubs. This is a GREAT new feature.

The best part is that it properly executes a “diff” check when you go back to the same Hub and click the button again. If you get an “up to date”, you know you’re going to have an easy night on that Hub. Otherwise, grab a beer and get downloadin’. 🙂

DM-UC-SpaceNoxx WIP For UT4

I don’t have much time to map these days so I thought I’d dip my toes in the water with something relatively simple. A couple of people asked me on the forums if I would remake DM-MCC-SpaceNoxx so I figured it was a good choice. I’m hoping to have a playable alpha version in a couple of weeks assuming I can find time to work on it.

I’m rebuilding it completely from scratch, and trying to scale it work well with UT4 eye height and movement.  Too bad you don’t get XP points for working in the editor!
