Epic has released an official DM-Chill trailer in case you’re away from the game and need some Chill-love ;).
Epic has released an official DM-Chill trailer in case you’re away from the game and need some Chill-love ;).
And the answer is… today! Epic has released a new build today (see release notes) and the long-awaited, fully meshed version of DM-Chill is in the game! It is stunningly beautiful and it is an incredible Unreal Engine 4 benchmark for visuals. One of the most amazing things about it is that the performance is quite high given the amount of content on screen.
Now it’s soapbox time: I know there are going to be a bunch of whiners that will say that it’s visually noisy and hard to see targets compared to the BSP shell. For those people I have to ask, what the hell were you thinking?? There is no way possible that a fully meshed DM-Chill is going to provide the same target visibility as the BSP shell. That said, I didn’t have much problem picking up targets myself so they did the best job possible with the lighting yet still allowing a believable atmosphere.
For the DM-Chill WIP shell lovers, it’s still available and I will probably have it up on the Hub for those looking for a competitive DM-Chill experience.
The first ever UT4 ESL Duel Cup is live today! Go to the UT Twitch channel to catch all of the action!
Today’s UT project update stream was quite the visual feast. New visuals from DM-Chill, with a substantially changed lighting scheme, and YemYam’s revamped robot design, dominated the proceedings.
RZE stated that another new build, most likely containing DM-Chill, could appear in about 2 weeks. Looking forward to having the completed Chill assets in the editor for mapping goodness. It was a bit surprising that the Epic team wasn’t tracking on the ESL tournament coming up. Isn’t this kind of a big step??
You can view a replay of the stream HERE.
The UC Hub @utgame map list is slowly building up again after the 4.11 update. Here’s the roll up of the maps added since the previous update post:
DM-Erase_A1_Fix by Flikswich
DM-StalwartXL-1a by Trinitek
DM-Mimic-b3 by Fjaru (yay!)
DM-Absolution-02b by Trinitek
Use the Download All Content button in the Hub!
As some of you know, Black Hole Sunscreen by Michiel van den Bos is featured in the new UT in DM-Spacer. Since DM-Spacer isn’t getting much play-love these days, I thought I’d link to Michiel’s YouTube post so you can bliss out when you’re not in game.
Unfortunately Michiel is not officially writing music for the new UT and considers this tune an “accident” while testing out new recording gear. Here’s hoping for many more UT accidents from Michiel!
The first ever UT4 ESL Cup has been announced! There are different sign-ups for Europe and North America. Great to see the ESL team pushing this through!

Epic’s project update for this week was chock full of info about the next release. With the whiners in full swing right now, Steve Polge, listed off several changes to the core game that should be in the next build within the next two weeks.
Movement will be adjusted to compensate for the 15% scale change and many weapons will see small changes. Still probably not enough for the “I want it free, and I want it yesterday” crowd, it will be interesting to see if it at least heads in the right direction to appease the mob.
Stu Fitzsimmons showed off the most substantial views yet of a fully-meshed DM-Chill. It looks like a beautiful piece of art befitting a next-gen game. And no, it won’t have the same visibility as the shell – not rocket science there.
Lastly, Pete Knepley discussed the new Match Making Ranking (MMR) system which will be handled on the backend instead of on servers themselves.

The Unreal Carnage Hub was updated today with the following maps:
DM-Absolution-01i by Trinitek
DM-Conflux_A02 by Scinbed
DM-Nine_H35 by tidu
DM-Deep_Alpha03 by CaptainMigraine
DM-UntoldStorage by MitchMitchell
Be sure to use the “Download All Content” button in the Hub to get caught up instead of having to download while you are playing. There are quite a few maps not updated to UE 4.11 yet as mappers rebuild from 4.8.
The UC Hub instance startup has been simplified. Gone are the “All Maps” gametypes and most of Epic’s stock rules. The standard “DeathMatch” gametype will now have all of the custom maps.
Now that UT4 has updated to UE 4.11, all previously distributed community maps will no longer run in-game. This is all part of the #PreAlpha process so it’s part of the game for mappers right now.
Unfortunately, a bug has crept into the 2/1/16 UT Editor release that removed compression from the PAKing process. This has led to community made maps doubling in size and will undoubtedly slow the re-release of maps that are farther along towards completion due to slow download times from servers.
The good news is the bug has been logged and fixed and is now off to QA so hopefully we’ll get at least a hotfix for the Editor here shortly.
